Moonstone has been used in jewelry for centuries, including ancient civilizations. The Romans admired moonstone, as they believed it was born from solidified rays of the moon. Both the Romans and Greeks associated Moonstone with their lunar deities. In more recent history, the moonstone became popular during the Art Nouveau period; French goldsmith René Lalique and many others created a large quantity of jewelry using this stone.
Moonstone gemstones were considered sacred in India. Ganesha, the four-handed god of the moon, has worn a moonstone at the center of his forehead since the beginning of time. Hindu legend states that moonstone stone is created by moonbeams. It was once believed that a person could see his or her future while holding a moonstone in the mouth on the night of a full moon.
Ancient Romans believed moonstone rocks were created from drops of moonlight. According to them, each moonstone rock contains an image of the moon goddess Diana. It was believed that the moon goddess Diana would grant love, victory, wealth and wisdom to whoever possessed a moonstone.
